I contend that the intricate set of rules we call chivalry as personified in medieval romantic literature such as Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is not only a futile attempt by the noble class to venerate themselves, but also a fictional representation of the truer abysmal reality in the late Middle Ages as undermined in the more realistic popular ballads.
